Raquy discovered Islamic-style illumination painting while living in Istanbul. She immersed herself in the study of techniques to decorate sacred documents in gold. This intricate and meticulous process requires a deep understanding of the materials and techniques used by ancient artisans. For over 5 years, Raquy trained at the Klasik Sanat Art Academy, Caferaga Medresse, the Taner Alakus Atelier and Nazan Berbercioglu’s Harmony Sanat Atelier.

Through the guidance of her master teachers, Raquy has been able to bring these ancient techniques to life in her own artwork and now offers introductory workshops that give you a taste of this sacred art form, taking you through the process and guiding you on how to create your own illuminated painting.

In this PAINTING WORKSHOP, Raquy will provide all the needed materials. She will guide you through all the steps of creating a small, illuminated motif of your own, while sharing about the history and “rules” of the tradition. Many of our long-time drumming students took this workshop out of curiosity the last time she was in town and decided afterwards, much to everyone’s surprise, that it actually might be the most fun workshop ever!
